Saturday, February 26, 2011

Today, if a scientist working in a incommunicable laboratory discovered a "new" ingredient called fiber, it would be hailed as a miracle nutrient, and one of the most medical discoveries of all time. Stock market and Investing Myths Part 1 - Five Investing Myths Exposed!

Friday, February 25, 2011

The up-to-date stock market crash of 2008 has left millions of investors questioning their accepted speculation reasoning. Financial advisors are finding it more and more difficult to convince their clients of sound financial plans -- and rightfully so. Americans are wising up to the reality that investing may be more complex then they originally thought. Or maybe investing is not more complicated. Maybe investors have plainly been miseducated.

Miseducation can come in many distinct forms. Television stories, uneducated advisors, propaganda pieces, not to mention just good ol' fashion uninformed word of mouth. In fact word of mouth is probably the biggest proponent of miseducation. But just because Uncle Jimmy says it, doesn't mean it is true. In this multi-part record series I'm going to expose some myths generally associated with the stock market and investing. If these myths are deeply held beliefs of your own I guarantee you can enhance your financial performance by plainly re-educating your speculation mindset.

Todays World News Headlines

1. The Stock market Must Go Up To Make Money

In my years of trading and instruction I have found this myth to be the most common mis-understanding of all. It makes excellent sense. When it comes to investing no single message is preached more clearly than this one. "Good news on Wall St. Today, the stock market rose 79 points." Or "Tough day on Wall St as stocks fell a anticipated 87 points". These headlines and messages are no ifs ands or buts seared into the subconscious minds of virtually all Americans. Even well educated citizen like myself who understand how the market works find it hard to not smile when we hear of huge gains on Wall St.

However just because the market goes up it doesn't mean citizen made money. And just because the market goes down it does not mean citizen lost money. The truth is there are three directions the stock market can, and does move: Up, Down, and sideways. And you good believe if there are manifold ways the market can move there are also manifold ways to make money with each directional move. Myth: Busted.

2. Stock market Investing Is Risky

This is an equally popular myth yet one which can also be debunked. I already stated that there are three ways the market can move: up, down, and sideways. And I've already established that most citizen think when the market goes up you can make money. But that is only 1/3 of the choices since the market can move three directions. That means the odds are stacked against you 2/3 of the time. With that math the risk associated with this myth may appear true. Any way I also said there are distinct strategies to make money with each of the directions the market may move. That means with a minute instruction you can learn to make money in each of those three directions.

The risk here is not in the market itself but rather in the lack of education. For citizen who do not have a allowable instruction of the stock market these investments can no ifs ands or buts be risky. In fact if you do not have an instruction the odds are 2/3 against you that you will receive an instruction the hard way - loosing money! Any way with a minute instruction and a minute knowledge you can make money in 3/3 market directions. Myth: Busted.

3. Over 20 Years The Stock market always Goes Up

This myth is a popular of financial advisors and to be honest it is kind of true. during the last 100 years (which I expect encompasses your lifetime) we've had an fascinating series of events. Let's look at that for a moment: If you invested ,000 in 1909 for 20 years by 1929 that money would have been worth over ,000! Not bad. But if you had started in 1911 and invested ,000 20 years later in 1931 you would have just right colse to ,000. Oops. Wrong 20 years. If you had invested ,000 in 1919 for 20 years it would have been worth roughly ,000 in 1939. Oops. Wrong 20 years. If you had invested ,000 in 1929 (God Forbid) getting back to a ,000 value would have taken until about 1955 (A full 26 years!). Oops, wrong 20 years. ,000 in 1939 would have been worth about ,000 in 1959. Not bad. 1949-1969 would have yielded a similar result. 1959-1979 would have made some money, but not nearly sufficient to keep up with inflation. 1969-1989 would have roughly doubled your money. 1979-99 was great. 1989-2009 worked well too. But what about 1999-2009? uh-oh. If you invested ,000 in the market in 1999 today that ,000 would be worth roughly ,000.

My point is the market doesn't always go up. And it is no ifs ands or buts un-cool if you're one of those citizen who get stuck in a 20 year down cycle when you're ready to pull out your money. And is it no ifs ands or buts worth waiting 20 years to find out if you will get to retire during a market high or a market low? To top that off currently (in 2009) many economists are predicting the next 15 years to be one of those large down cycles. With such a spotted history and so many negative predictions is it no ifs ands or buts worth risking the next 20 years to be anything like 1911, 1919, 1929, 1939, or any of the other rough 20 year cycles? Truth is the market does Not always go up over any 20 year period. And as 1909-1911 showed us, only a merge of years can make the distinction in the middle of a no ifs ands or buts great 20 return and a downright devastating 20 year period. Myth: Busted.

4. The Best Way To Make Money In Stocks Is To Buy And Hold

Buy and hold is primary wisdom. But it parallels the first three myths we've talked about. The idea is you buy a stock and hold it and in a few years it will be worth more. Hopefully a lot more. Since buy and hold doesn't always work citizen get the idea that investing is risky. Truth is speculation risk is directly proportional to the estimate of investing instruction a someone has (or does not have). In the pro investing world we have distinction on Buy and Hold - we call it Buy, Hold, and Pray. That's because with this strategy a someone buys a stock, they hold it, and pray it goes up. Of course with three potential market directions, and the reality that markets do not always go higher, the investor may be praying quite a bit only to perceive their chances of having that prayer answered are about 1 in 3! Myth: Busted.

5. News And research Groups Have the Hot Stock Tips

This final myth is one of the most popular speculation strategies for high paid professionals. Some citizen make a lot of money selling these hot speculation tips to citizen who want to put their money in the market. Any way the foundation of Dow law no ifs ands or buts proves this method to be a myth. Charles Dow wrote colse to the turn of the 20th century and is the father of the Dow Jones industrial median which we often refer to as "the market". He states in his theories that there are 3 phases to the growth of a trend. The Accumulation phase, the public Participation phase, and ultimately the Dispersion phase. The accumulation phase is when major institutions begin to buy. Like the name suggests the public participation phase is when the masses of the public begin to buy. And the dispersion phase is when the major institutions (who started the trend) begin to sell and "disperse" their positions. The fascinating thing about this is Dow directly tied news associated stories to the dispersion phase. Basically stating by the time it's in print and the news is high, the move is over and the "smart money" has already begun dispersing their positions.

Using the basis of Dow law alone we can assume if it's in print it's too late. In fact generally speaking this proves true among printed stock recommendations. I recently analyzed one of these picks with a student. The pick was for the stock to be higher in 12 months yet after a brief determination we carefully there was no ifs ands or buts zero green signs to push forward with this trade. There were about 8 yellow indications saying this might be a good trade in the future, and there were 3 red flags telling us reasons this stock should go down in the near future.

The reality about hot stock tips is they are normally not that hot. primary personel determination is always more reliable and avoiding these tips will help you avoid losses in your portfolio. Myth: Busted.

The Rise of Lawlessness

Thursday, February 24, 2011

State Police Commissioner Ken Moroney said this past week that the up-to-date riots had destroyed the festive season for the residents of Sydney, Australia's largest city. The disturbances were described as some of the worst outbreaks in their history. Fierce gangs numbering up to 5000 young white men brawled with police along with groups whom they believed to be of Arab descent.

Last year riots broke out in the Aborigine area of Sydney after the death of a young boy who had been allegedly chased by police. Up to this time, these riots had been described as the worst in the city's history.

Todays World News Headlines

Some believe that tensions have been rising in Australia due to the 9/11 attacks and October 2002 bombings in Bali that killed 88 Australians.

The Rioting In up-to-date Months

In November rioting in France had spread to as many as 300 towns, which soon spilled over into the neighboring countries of Belgium and Germany. About 4,700 vehicles were burned since the rioting began with 1,200 suspects detained. One 61-year-old man was beaten to death while trying to extinguish a trash can fire.

In October riots broke out in Ohio when neo-nazi groups threatened to march against "black crime" in north Toledo. The violence started when residents ventilated their anger on police after throwing rocks at the Nazi marchers. Toledo Mayor Jack Ford, who had declared a state of emergency, blamed the violence on gang members in the community.

In September, after Hurricane Katrina left levees broken and the city of New Orleans flooded, looting became total in the wake of America's deadliest natural disaster. Looters used garbage cans and even inflatable mattresses to float away with groceries, jeans, tennis shoes, Tv sets, and even weapons. Mayor Ray Nagin reported that the looting was so appalling that halting the thieves became their main concern.

Various reasons for the up-to-date rioting have been offered; such as, multiculturalism, poverty, unemployment, low-paying jobs, lack of parental control, and gang violence; but no matter what the reason, the Bible predicts that the spirit of lawlessness will admittedly increase as the closing stages of this dispensation draws near.

The Revelation of Lawlessness

Jesus stated: "Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold" (Matthew 24:12, Niv). Young women reported missing and children being molested are a daily occurrence. The up-to-date epidemic of female teachers raping their young male students is another example of the evil lurking in our public school systems. Have you belief about taking a cruise lately? Over 14 population have gone missing from cruise ships in the last two years, the newest only last weekend.

Jesus declared, "as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the advent of the Son of Man" (Matt. 24:37, Niv). There are many similarities to our current day with the period prior to the Flood. Genesis 6:11 states: "the earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence." This admittedly depicts our contemporary day era of the 2lst century. The Bible describes man accurately: "And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually" (Gen. 6:5).

The Restrainer of Lawlessness

Paul warns "the private power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of His mouth and destroy by the splendor of His coming" (2 Thess. 2:7-8, Niv).

Who or what is holding back the forces of evil in the world today? Many Bible students recognize this man as the Holy Spirit of God. God's Spirit is working today through the church to restrain evil and bring about God's purposes in the world. William McDonald informs us that "as early as Genesis 6:3, the Holy Spirit is spoken of in relationship with the restraint of evil." however when the Lord Raptures the church, the restraining work of the Holy Spirit will end. Then Satan and his dominions will be given permission to bring death and destruction on planet earth.

People will continue to be saved during the Tribulation by the foremost of the Holy Spirit, but it is the Spirit who is hindering Satan's program of evil in the world today and the rise of Antichrist. In the Old Testament God's Spirit worked "with" the believer, but after Pentecost the Holy Spirit now abides forever "in" the believer (John 14:16-17). The Spirit who permanently indwells the church as well as the individual believer will be removed at the Rapture. Those saints who are saved during the Tribulation will not be part of the church, but subjects of the millennial kingdom.

The Final effect of Lawlessness

The situation today will, without a doubt, continue to worsen until the Lord ultimately calls His church home. Then the "man of lawlessness" (2 Thess. 2:3, Niv) will be revealed, who is none other than the Beast (Rev. 13:1) or Antichrist (1 John 2:18, 22). The final effect of the strangeness of iniquity, or "lawlessness" (Niv), will furnish a false Christ who will rule over a false kingdom. He will be Satan's masterpiece and ultimate deception, yet he will meet an ignoble end, his doom sealed in the lake of fire (Rev. 19:20; 20:10). Before this happens he will lead millions to their destruction.

The possibility of total anarchy is ripening in America and if another devastating terrorist strike or natural disaster occurs the possibility of chaos could speedily break forth. The spirit of lawlessness lies even now just below the surface waiting for the right moment to raise its ugly head. It continues to spin itself in our homes, in our public life, and even in the midst of our churches.

Paul cautioned: "This know also, that in the last days hazardous times shall come" (2 Tim. 3:1). He supplementary affirms that, "evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived" (2 Tim. 3:13). There are wicked men who are even now eagerly waiting for opportunities to commit their malicious deeds.

The inherent for hostility to occur again in the near time to come is certain, as this seems to be the precedent in today's violent culture. It is ironic that millions of members in our churches today remain entirely ignorant of Bible prophecies and the events that are soon to be played out. The ongoing rise of lawlessness is just one more sign that the return of Christ is nearer than ever before.

How To generate A News Angle

Monday, February 21, 2011

Think of a triangle. On the left, dream the story you want to tell. On the
right, you have zeitgeist , or curent events.

The object of the game is to generate
a unified, triangulated center...literally an "angle" for your story.

Todays World News Headlines

For example, if you have improved your firm practices, you might apply
the popularity of television transformations, and promote your story as an
"extreme makeover" for busy professionals.

By tying your story to something topical, you vastly improve its chances of
being heard.

A good story with a mediocre salesperson is great than a bad story told by the
most speak salesperson. Lack of slickness is honestly an asset.

If you had the many press kit in the world-but a lackluster story-I couldn't
get you on the Today Show . But if you were pregnant with Osama Bin Laden's
baby, I could get you on with a smudged fax.

In America Today, for great or worse, the way we come to be credible is by being
visible. These are wacky times. Where there's no visibility, there is no
credibility. That's just the way it works.

The Chilling Face of Child Labor - Loss of Life, Limb & Innocence

Saturday, February 19, 2011

While headlines about child labor still make the press today and the problem has anything But disappeared, it's a tough topic to tackle. There are strong arguments made on both sides of the debate, and although the global consensus frowns on the use of child labor, nearly 250 million children under 14 are still clocking in - often full-time.

And while the passing of each year will also see the passing of some 22,000 children in work-related accidents, working conditions have improved dramatically over the past century. While the height of the Victorian and industrial Ages, the stakes were even higher.

Todays World News Headlines

As children headed off to work en masse in an effort to keep their families fed and with a roof over their head, as they kissed their mothers, hugged their fathers and waved good-bye to toddling brothers and sisters, elementary school children walked off to a day at work that could very well have been their last.

Every shift, they faced the inherent loss of life, limb and innocence.

Just over 100 years ago, children were clocking in at article numbers, filling occupations that even the hardiest of today's adult workforce would shudder at. Forget baby-sitting, dog-walking, lemonade stands or mowing lawns, in the Victorian Age, kids were tackling the world's dirtiest jobs...

Blacksmiths

Imagine an eight year old wielding an anvil... Running about in sweltering temperatures, surrounded by hot metal, flying sparks, raging fires and physical dangers from all around. If they managed to make it through their careers without dying on the job, there were still the risks of heavy metal poisoning, carbon monoxide poisoning, infrared radiation eye damage, hearing loss and other hazards to vocalize with.

Tinsmiths

While not quite as likely to fall prey to on the job accidents as blacksmiths were, tinsmiths were often exposed to needful amounts of asbestos, leading to the multitude of health risks asbestos exposure entails, together with the cancer mesothelioma.

Foundry Work

As a general rule, in today's gentle society, molten metals and small children just don't mix. Not so back in the day... High temperatures, dangerous substances, airborne contaminates, molten metal, deafening noise and dangerous tool were just a few of the "perks" enjoyed by children who in today's society wouldn't even be old adequate to get their Learner's Permits!

Glass Factories

Heat, glare, glass, heavy equipment, gases, smoke, arsenic, cuts, lead poisoning... Not a pleasant line up at all. However, countless women and children slaved away at Victorian era glass factories for mere pocket change. Perhaps this is one of the reasons that in 1840 (in the midst of the Victorian Age) tradesmen had an midpoint lifespan of 27 years and laborers and servants could expect an even briefer 22 years.

Cotton & Textile Mills

These occupations had inherent risks with heavy machinery and the risk of constant splinters in too often unshod wee feet. What few population understood at the time was that, at the same time, the constant breathing in of lint can lead to a fatal disease known as Brown Lung - a disease not really caused by the lint fiber, but bacteria that grows and feeds on it. Young girls were most often at risk in the Victorian age, but today there were 88 such deaths between 1990 and 1998 - most from yarn, thread and fabric industries.

Coal Mines and Fields

Coal mines and fields pose workers (both children and adults) with threats from every direction. Methane gas, floods, cave-ins, tool accidents, explosive gases, and of course, the infamous Black Lung, where coal dust accumulates in the lungs over the long term and leads to a estimate of respiratory problems and even death.

And this, my friends, is just a small sampling of the occupations held by children in the industrial Revolution. Other jobs included coopers, cobblers, lace making, and leatherworking - none of which you see high school kids flocking to in droves today.

However, the loss of life and limb aside, there was an additional one high price that working children had to pay: the loss of innocence. When you're working 90 or more hours each week, and school is a luxury afforded only to the most affluent of children, it was hard for kids to "act their age". One look at the children heading off to work in the pre-dawn hours might take a double-take. Are those seven and eight year olds, are tiny wee old men and women with circles under their eyes, whisper thin arms and legs and torn and tattered clothes?

Faced with these hardships, Victorian Age kids had no choice to grow up and grow up fast. They struggled to cram as much life into the few decades they had to look send to. All the hours away from the watchful eyes of mom and dad made it too easy to fall from the right and narrow and deep into a life of crime and mischief, fluctuating from petty theft to more serious offenses. wee boys and girls found escape in dangerous pastimes like gambling, stealing and - in more instances than anything would like to admit - prostitution. After all, many of these darling wee angels were already being taken advantage of by their bosses and coworkers - why not earn a shilling or two for what had already been forcibly taken from you?

The horrors these children faced are roughly impossible to comprehend, but fortunately, the problem became so glaring, so un-ignorable that population of affect were motivated to make a convert and the children of the world found a estimate of champions that pioneered their cause and worked tirelessly to enhance not only working conditions, but the legislation that allowed factories and industries to exploit the services of women and children and formed the basis for equality and occupational safety that have come to be the standards of today.

However, despite the leaps and bounds that have been made in the Child Labor arena, exploitation is still rampant, and far too many children have to leave their dreams of obtaining an schooling behind to pursue an vocation so that their families can survive. What about the 4400?

Friday, February 18, 2011

Murders are so frequent in our country that a singular homicide seldom grabs national concentration unless the perpetrator or the victim is already a celebrity. Even a double murder is not national news. It takes many murders to make the headlines, Cnn, and the network evening news.

The Oklahoma bombing of April 19, 1995, which monopolized the news for days, claimed 167 lives and wounded nearly 500. The Twa flight 800 disaster of July 19, 1996 snuffed out the lives of 212 passengers and 17 crew members. Of course, there's also the 3000-plus citizen who died on Sept. 11, 2001.

Todays World News Headlines

When a disaster of this magnitude happens, the whole nation focuses concentration on the families of the dead and the hurting. Nothing seems more leading than to inspect why this occurred and what can be done to stop it from happening again.

Disasters elsewhere in the world can also claim our concentration for a few days, provided enough citizen have suffered death or injury. The Bhopal, India, disaster (Dec. 3, 1984) killed over 4000 and injured thousands more. The Pan Am Flight 103 explosion over Lockerbie, Scotland (Dec. 21, 1988), killed over 200, including 35 U.S. College students. And of course, most recently, there are the hundreds of thousands of victims of the tsunami of December 26, 2004. We hear of such disasters in shocked disbelief. We sympathize, we even weep, we pray for the victims' families.

Yet on each succeeding day in the U.S. Alone, 4400 human lives are ended by abortion. Yesterday 4400 died, today someone else 4400, and tomorrow 4400 more. Any disaster in any place in the world claiming that many lives in one day would command the center of the media spotlight. It would initiate congressional investigations, shut down whole industries for a safety inspection, or prompt relief organizations to initiate a immense fund-raising campaign. None of this happens for today's 4400. No one notices, few seem to care.

For each one of the 4400 there is a hurting mother, father, and grandparents. Doctors, nurses, condition workers, and others are affected by the tragedy. A host of citizen are whether grieving or becoming calloused to the hurt.

God has commissioned His saints to care for the weak and helpless, to defend those who have no other defender (Ps. 82:3-4; Ezek. 34:4; Acts 20:35). What are we doing for today's 4400? Are we concerned for their families? Does it matter to us what has happened? Tomorrow someone else 4400 will be killed. What of them?

What about the 4400?

Barack Obama As Mystic

Monday, February 14, 2011

Now that the selection is over I can say this without whatever accusing me of trying to sway the election! About a year ago, while reading "The Audacity of Hope," I got the notion that Barack Obama may be at the Mystic level of spiritual improvement - that is at the fourth of four stages we have sufficient data to address.* That of procedure was not conjecture sufficient to vote for him as president and I no ifs ands or buts did not think too much about it after that. It was only today, while I was recalling some aspects of some of his speeches, that it hit me: I am pretty sure: Barack Obama is a Mystic!

So tonight I dug up my copy of "The Audacity of Hope" and re-read the thirty-two page episode entitled "Faith." Sure enough, though he uses couched terms, parts of it read just like any one of the "Mystic" stories I am developing for my book!

Todays World News Headlines

Obama describes being brought up in a non-religious household under the sway of a Rational level grandmother "...too rational and too stubborn to accept whatever she couldn't see, feel, touch, or count." and a grandfather who could have been in the Lawless group! "...restless soul that might have found refuge in religious confidence had it not been for...an innate rebelliousness, a perfect inability to discipline his appetites..." (rules of a spoton religion might have helped here!) Then while he was growing up, Barack's mum would tell him about the frailties of the (Stage Two or particular level) "...Christians who populated her youth....sanctimonious preachers who would dismiss three-quarters of the world's habitancy as ignorant heathens doomed to spend the atfterlife in eternal damnation - and those who would insist that the earth and heavens had been created in seven days....She remembered the respectable church ladies who were all the time so quick to shun those unable to meet their own standards of propriety, even as they desperately concealed their own dirty diminutive secrets; the church fathers who uttered racial epithets and chiseled their workers out of any nickel that they could." "For my mother, organized religion too often dressed up closed-mindedness in the garb of piety, cruelty and oppression in the cloak of righteousness." (p. 203)

Moreover it seems his mum may have been a Mystic herself in that she made sure he was equally exposed to all the world's great religions - as part of his education, not in the hope that he adopt one. "Religion was an expression of human culture, she would explain, not its wellspring, just one of the many ways - and not necessarily the best way - that man attempted to control the unknowable and understand the deeper truths about our lives." (p. 204)

Barack then goes on to ascribe supplementary Mystic-sounding tendencies to his mother, saying she was "...the most spiritually awakened someone that I've ever known. She had an unswerving instinct for kindness, charity and love....she worked mightily to instill in me the values that many Americans learn in Sunday school: honesty, empathy, discipline, delayed gratification, and hard work. She raged at poverty and injustice, and scorned those who were indifferent to both. Most of all she possessed an abiding sense of wonder, a reverence for life and its precious, transitory nature that could properly be described as devotional....she saw mysteries everywhere and took joy in the sheer strangeness of life." (p. 205)

Through all this episode on faith, Obama does not disclose himself production his own way straight through the earlier spiritual stages himself but in the pages that succeed phrases show up exposing personal values he holds that accord with those of the Mystic. He makes these statements as though all his readers would be in deal that these values are of the top order - where in fact, those at stages other than Mystic probably have diminutive appreciation for their value. He speaks of the need to build community and make justice real, the value of a type of "faith that doesn't mean you don't have doubts, or that you relinquish your hold on the world." (p. 207) While I do not have the background to know why this would be so, he claims the "black church rarely had the luxury of separating individual salvation from public salvation." no ifs ands or buts concern with public salvation (or let us say, the public good) Is the territory of the Mystic and in approximately direct opposition to the goals of many an ethnocentric, "we are the only ones who will be saved!" form of organized religion.

When Barack chose to join a single church** "It came about as a selection and not an epiphany" (p. 208) This is typical of a Mystic. If they pick to participate in an organized religion it tends to be in full knowledge that any given church or religion represents only a part of the real truth and not the whole; that they are chosing this church or religion as a means to a greater end - in Barack's case, the greater end he was seeking was a community "in which to ground my most deeply held beliefs." (p. 206) A statement like this implies that there were many other choices he could have made that could have met that end just as well; it is not that he believed this church held any final absolute answers for him, assured his salvation, or promised him a excellent God.
Going on to supplementary by comparison himself in relation to his faith, he speaks of the need to "engage all persons of faith in the larger scheme of American renewal... And to think in terms of 'thou' and not just 'I.' (p. 216)

The best summary statement found in this episode puts Obama somewhere in the middle of Rational and Mystic - which parenthetically is where I myself reside personally - "This is not to say that I am unanchored in my faith. There are some things that I'm no ifs ands or buts sure about (Mystics approximately never say they are 'absolutely sure' about any matters of faith) the Golden Rule, (nearly all Mystics in the stories in my book mention this) the need to battle cruelty in all its forms, (this sounds more like the Rational level again) the value of love and charity, humility and grace." (p. 224) Love, humility and grace are concepts Mystics seem to understand in a way totally different from the way others use them. And just since yesterday I have come to believe Barack Obama'uses those words in the Mystical sense, though he never comes out and says this.

Now a higher level of spiritual improvement does not imply a higher worth as a someone and is not a criterion by which we are accustomed to selecting a president. I have not studied sufficient history to know if we have ever had a Mystic level someone in the White House before. I do believe most of the presidents in my lifetime have been either at the Lawless level (yes! these habitancy disguise themselves very well in many cases and often rise to foremost positions) or the particular level (the current administration!)

So over the months of the campaign, for varied reasons it took me a while to come around in my decision to vote for this man but in the end I did vote for Obama myself. Only time will tell if a Mystic foremost this country will be a good thing or not.

But somehow once the results were in last night, I felt a deep sense of joy. I suddenly felt 'certain' (as my Rational level self is often prone to do) that for once we were going to have a leader not prone to serving the selfish and egocentric goals of a small few over that of the greater good. Maybe we can even dare to hope today's headline in a French newspaper was correct: "Obama's victory marks America's reconciliation with the world!" ***

*To recap for those who are not regular readers of my blog, Stage One is what we are calling the Lawless stage. Folks at this stage have never submitted their being to whatever other than their own will. They have never truly embraced religion at any level and generally pursue their own aims with no regard for how that might sway others. Stage Two then we call the particular stage. This group includes most habitancy who are traditionally religious. These are habitancy who have chosen to accept the rules and explanations offered in a pre-set way by an organized religion. They tend toward a literal interpretation of everything their church teaches and most likely insist that their religion is somehow more true than all the others. Though they may believe very fervently, they are ones who have never no ifs ands or buts questioned their faith and thus there is something superficial - or less mature - about their faith. At Stage Three or the Rational level the someone has allowed some questioning into his faith system. either he has realized that some things his religion teaches cannot be no ifs ands or buts true, or he at least begins to take some level of personal accountability for owning his beliefs in a personal, individual way. He may either wind up rejecting religion altogether for a time, or he may find a new way to consolidate his faith with the questions he has run into. If this someone who has survived the questioning stage then returns to his religion or Maybe instead chooses some more universal way of living out his faith, understands elements of faith in a more metaphorical way and maybe allows some creative elements into it, then he has probably moved on to Stage Four or the Mystic level. Some say there may be many stages above the Mystic level but there are not sufficient habitancy at those stages to study them.

** which we now know he later renounced, largely because the pastor was sounding too ethnocentric - which would never do for a Mystic - and of procedure made statements that would threaten Obama's political career!

*** "La victoire d'Obama marque la reconciliation de l'Amerique avec le monde." L'Express, as quoted at french-word-a-day.typepad.com/motdujour, accessed 11/5/08.

The Great Depression Comparisons Are Way Off

Sunday, February 13, 2011

Bank runs, financial meltdowns, and ultimate crisis measures have investors on edge. The media is doing its part by playing on those fears, producing headlines that lack permissible context. September 29th's headlines said it all, with every news outlet shouting about the Dow Jones industrial Average's largest point decline in history! Never mind that it was only the 17th largest ration decline (which is still bad, but not "crash" bad), the media is trying to parlay fear into increased concentration and viewership.

All that fear is pushing many habitancy to ask the question, is a depression ahead? The runs on Wachovia and Washington Mutual were stark reminders of that seemingly, but uncomfortably too real, long-gone era. If fear is adequate to collapse the largest thrift in the country, what else is vulnerable?

Todays World News Headlines

Lost in the shuffle of doom-flavored noise, as websites spring up over night touting lists of bank failure predictions, are some huge basic differences between then and now.
There are two major distinctions, unchecked systemic fear and deflation. A closer look at the two will assuredly demonstrate why a depression is not even a remote possibility.

First, bank failures in the early 1930s were both numerous and paralyzing. Many habitancy think the collapses of IndyMac, Wachovia and Washington Mutual are end of the world scenarios. But seeing back, from the end of 1929 straight through 1933, 35% of all bank deposits were lost or withdrawn. The bank runs of that era were unchecked.

In 1929 banks were typically one-town thrifts, operating one or two branches. There were a few larger banks, notably in New York City. When the stock market crashed and the real estate bubble burst it caused a panic in the New York banks, some of which failed. Depositors in those failed institutions lost everything, as there was no Fdic. That knowledge caused a few local bank runs, as habitancy feared losing their whole life savings.

So, without any safeguards, bank runs spread throughout the country. Good institutions failed as much as bad ones. All it took were rumors. Because these small banks were like islands they had no way of paying a run of deposit withdrawals - they could not call in mortgages, nor could they sell them since no market existed. When the vault cash was gone the bank sought protection and concluded its doors, commonly for good. Depositors who missed getting their money out lost everything.
Could a cascade of bank runs happen again? Not likely since the Fdic guarantees up to 0,000 in deposits at a single bank. And, in fact, despite the well-publicized troubles on Wall street only twelve banks have failed this year. While some habitancy may fear a shaky bank, that guarantee is adequate to keep 98% of depositors safe according to the Aba's April bank survey. In the cases of Wachovia and Washington Mutual, no depositor lost any of their money. Their accounts were plainly transferred to dissimilar banks with no delay in way - Citigroup has taken and guaranteed all Wachovia's depositors while Jp Morgan has guaranteed Washington Mutual's accounts. Current Federal preserve statistics show that the money supply and total deposits at banks are still growing (one full year after the crisis began) not declining dramatically.

Deflation is the real imagine there was a Great Depression. The contraction in the banking theory created the deflationary pressures that turned a severe stepping back into a depression. When you step back and think about money in its most basic terms, in increasing to being a store of value it is also a medium of exchange. You work at a job in change for money that you, in turn, change for the basic things you need. You save money to change for basic needs at a later date. If your savings and your revenue are both threatened, without any immediate alternative source of cash, you are forced to use an additional one medium of exchange.

What happened in 1930 and 1931 was exactly that. Without the ability to make more money (rising unemployment) and a loss of savings (bank failures) habitancy were forced to use other assets in change for basic necessities. Mass selling and bartering of household goods and assets reduced the prices on all goods and assets in the economy. In response the cheaper had to dramatically ageement to reflect lower pricing of both assets and the profitability of conducting business.

The deflationary spiral became self-sustaining. Those who had no money had to keep exchanging at lower and lower prices. Those who did have money held on to it out of fear and prospect of still lower prices. The net influence was a nearly unblemished halt in economic activity.
From 1929 straight through 1933 the broad price level of the cheaper fell 25%. Those price declines were broad-based, an correct reflection of every economic sector.

The duplicate whammy of the credit shock from bank failures (including 10,797 banks that went out of business) plus deflation caused an improbable 45% decline in Gdp over that same period. Projecting that onto today's economy, we would have to see a .4 trillion decline in economic action over a four-year period.

There are serious problems in the financial system, and a stepping back is already under way in this first full year after the crisis began. But this contraction will not be nearly as severe as the 9% decline in 1930 (the first year of the depression) or the 13% decline in 1932 (the worst single year of the depression). The banking theory will not suffer double-digit declines in depository inventory levels, even if there are more large financial failures. That should be the headline for newspapers and 24-hour news channels, not the end-of-the-world hyperbole.

Defining Spirituality

Saturday, February 12, 2011

While thinking over this past week, after Christmas and before New Years, I was watching the news on all the New Years traditions that the Southern United States still adheres to. Things like eating greens for financial security in the advent year, not taking your trash out on New Years for luck, and black-eyed peas for something my great gramma used to tell me, but I find myself forgetting. The South is full of superstitions, as most places are, but I woke up this morning thinking about those. I was wondering where they came from - like the fear that if you sweep your house after dark, you'll sweep your good luck away because you can't tell the difference without the light - and I realized that some things are universal, no matter the religion a person holds themselves closest to.

When talking about spirituality, I try and focus on the coarse grounds that all habitancy who think themselves spiritual share, not unlike superstitions that cross regions, families, and reliance systems. I researched it online; I found that there are two sects of habitancy - those who believe spirituality is a part of organized religion and those who believe spirituality is the opposite of organized religion. I also found a anticipated whole of similarities in all reliance systems that can be classified as spiritual. I may have missed some, but if I do, please point them out in the comment section below.

Todays World News Headlines

Stories

I was reading about dissimilar beliefs this morning on beliefnet.com, and I realized that all reliance systems have a love for stories. Most of the Bible is written in a story format, and to see it translated into a modern version makes you comprehend how true that is (Try The Word on the road or The Message Bible). This morning, I read a story from the Dalai Lama about wisdom. In the parts of the Qu'ran I have read, it was a storyline. The Native American tribes not only told their stories, but acted them out with by comparison costumes and music. Humanity has an awesome association to the story, and even as the smallest child, we beg to hear more. We soak up the events that are relayed with not only a plot, but learning character and morality by the experiences of others.

We, as a human race, are fixated on stories. We spend millions and billions of dollars on cable Tv, books of all sorts (novels, biographies, poetry collections...) and then movies. Hollywood makes money off of the telling and retelling of stories, and then once it's off the big screen, we pay more money to rent or own it. At campfires, after dark, habitancy tell ghost stories. The news has headline stories and stories of events that happened and events that will happen. Your grandfather has his favorite childhood story. Your mother tells you the story of when she first fell in love.

Our hearts thrive on stories.

The Divine

Most habitancy who think themselves spiritual believe that there is something bigger than humanity at work. Whether it is a god or goddess, mother Nature, or plainly a reliance in existential energy, there is something much bigger. We don't just exist. We weren't just an accident. We aren't just alone in this huge world and even larger universe. There's a point and a suspect for life.

Worship

Whether meditation, praise in song, or taking a walk in nature, nearly every reliance theory has a form of worship. There is something deeply spiritual to feel a deeper association with the Divine. I was walking with my husband's step-mother recently, who is Norse Pagan. She was explaining to me a bit about her beliefs and she told me that even the act of being surface was worship. Planting flowers was worship. Pruning and caring for her prized jasmine plants was worship. She said that plainly connecting was enough. I thought that was vastly beautiful, and found much of myself as a Christian in that description. I have found myself singing internal praises at a beautiful sunset and the feeling of association to God is what my soul needed.

Something Bigger than Death

Most reliance systems do not state that when your heart stops beating, it's like the lights have gone out and that's the end of the story. Actually, in many, that is plainly the beginning. Whether it be a life after death, reincarnation, or something else - there's an explanation. A story. A prolonged role to play. A bonus or punishment. It doesn't just end.

Morality and Human Nature

I've found that most reliance systems contain a code of morality that seems to start much the way the oath doctors take: Do no harm. There is also an explanation of human nature that essentially describes our emotions to love and hate, to safe and harm, to be kind and to be mean. There is also a focus on becoming great than you were before. There is a increase process built in to all this, and to some, spirituality is more about the journey of increase than the easy existence of a reliance structure.

Prayer

The major religions of the world put a large focus on prayer and meditation, but they don't have the monopoly on it. Many reliance systems contain a reliance that a human can cry out to the Divine and that prayer will be heard, and maybe answered. It's often been said that as long as there are tests, there will be prayer in school. Humorous though it may be, humans have a deep desire to have something beyond themselves help them convert circumstances.

Supernatural Intervention and Miracles

And finally, the answers to prayers. The cancerous increase that disappears before surgery. The car that narrowly missed you on the way to work. Needing to stop for a band-aid and ending up late for work the morning the twin towers fell. We all seem to have a deep reliance that we are not alone in this big mess of a world. We all see things that we can't by comparison and we don't know if we want to explain, but somehow, it ended up the way we hoped it would. We read about them in Reader's Digest, we hear them from habitancy we meet at work, and friends tell about them in hushed awe-stricken tones over the phone. The supernatural at work is something that keeps us all going, and heaven knows humanity needs that much.
